Vertical extension of living space to provide a hub for a family to enjoy together.
A bungalow in Portishead with several previous extensions has created a fragmented floor plan with the key shared spaces spread out at different ends of the ground floor.
We were commissioned to explore the viability of adding an additional storey which would serve as the new heart of the home. This new development was to include a snug, W.C., pantry, and kitchen/diner which could take advantage of views over the Bristol Estuary. The existing ground floor would be reconfigured to provide a large lounge for entertaining, and a large master bedroom with en-suite and walk-in dressing room.
After several design ideas and meetings with the clients, we landed on a layout the client was happy with and would be achievable for the budget allocated.
This project did not come without its challenges during the planning stage but we worked with the local planning authority to successfully achieve planning permission. We are now working on producing construction drawings in which we detail the building fabric and devise a strategy for building the proposed above the existing bungalow. The clients have ambitions to use cork as the external material finish which will provide thermal and weatherproofing qualities to the dwelling.
